Getting Started in Individual Counseling and Trauma Therapy
The decision to start Individual Therapy is a big step and I understand that it is both liberating and frightening. If this is your first time, you may be afraid of the unknown or feel a sense of failure at being unable to "solve your own problems". If you have had previous experience with therapy and it was unsuccessful or if you had mixed results, you may feel ambivalent. These feelings are very common and understandable and we can address your concerns as we begin.

My Approach to Individual Therapy
In the first few session we will begin by getting to know each other and exploring what brings you to therapy at this particular time. I will ask many questions so I can understand your history as well as the history of current difficulties so we can get to the root causes of what is causing your pain and where you may be stuck. Individual counseling is a collaboration which evolves at individual pace, in an atmosphere of safety, trust, connection and collaboration.
Much of our work together is going to involve an examination of important past and present relationships and their effect on your character formation, self and world view, coping mechanisms and self-esteem. My experience over many years of practice, has taught me that deepest causes of pain are related to or caused by disruptions in intimacy (trauma), separations, abandonments, instabilities and attachment injuries throughout life.
My view is that all pain is trauma based, be it catastrophic traumas or as we call it big "T" traumas or more ordinary little "t" traumas. I do EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) with most of my individual patients as I find it to be most effective and efficient way of clearing many symptoms and difficulties.
In Therapy We'll Utilize Several Modalities
EMDR is an information processing therapy and uses an eight phase protocol which addresses the traumatic experiences and the way in which trauma is integrated in our emotions, body and cognition. At the end of EMDR therapy, these traumas are not experiences as emotionally charged and are cleared.
My other approaches to individual therapy are based in Psychodynamic Therapy as well as Mindfulness based therapies.
I am also trained and experienced in treatment of addictions. Alcohol and substance abuse counseling were the first specialty at the start of my career. Whether you're looking for EMDR & trauma therapy in NYC or another one of my areas of specialty, I can be reached anytime at (212) 853-1388 or via email irinafirstein [at] aol.com.

I have been a client of Irina's since 2006. Working with her has changed my life. I started therapy in the midst of a separation, out of a dysfunctional marriage, not understanding my choices in men and my behavior in relationships, as well as dealing with major self esteem issues. My work with Irina has led to a complete and total revolution in the way that I think about the world, it has inspired me to continue to self-improve and evolve. With Irina's help, I was able to break my pattern of making bad choices in men and being an unhealthy partner. I have learned how to become an independent, self-confident, fully-formed woman. I am now able to choose healthy, supportive and loving partners and friends. I have also learned how to be empathic, reasonable, understanding and respectful partner and a friend. Irina is extremely insightful and wise, she is able to deliver things that patients may not want to hear but need to hear in a very respectful and kind way. I have seen several therapists in my life, and I feel like Irina is the only one who truly "gets me" - because she has taken the time to truly understand me, understand where I was and understand where I want to go. That kind of an investment by a therapist in her patients is so incredibly unique and so highly valuable to those of us seeking help. I feel I can tell her anything and she will not judge me. Insights that she has had into my life have been dead-on and have truly helped me see where I went awry. Irina's help has led to a way of being which has reduced the amount of conflict in my life. I feel much of the time that I am a better, wiser, smarter and stronger person than I could have imagined." Amy, 30
